Insights of space medicine for the benefit of the patient
"So you plan to build an external lymphatic heart," said the medical head of the Institute for Space Medicine, when we informed him about our project. He could not have put it in a more appropriate way!

The lower part of the body disappears in a chamber, the space tube, in which alternating phases of negative and normal pressure are created. It's similar to a bicycle pump: to and fro. In each phase of negative pressure, the peripheral blood vessels dilate, plasma and oxygen flood in, the venous vessels and the precollectors of the lymphatic system fill up by suction. During each phase of normal pressure, veins and lymphatic vessels are then compressed, carbon dioxide, large molecules of metabolic waste products and lymphatic loads are removed and transported towards the trunk.

The "external lymphatic heart" is called Vacumed. It is a modification of an LBNPD (Lower Body Negative Pressure Device), which astronauts have to use in space. The unique characteristic of this internationally patented therapeutic device is that it shows optimum effect in the enhancement of perfusion and extension of walking range, as well as in the treatment of postthrombotic syndromes, e.g. treatment of oedema, and the rehabilitation and performance increase of athletes.

Furthermore, the Vacumed leaves its mark on the prevention market in the segment of leg disorders and vascular diseases, and is an integral part of competency centres specialised in the treatment of venous and leg disorders.
